When a family embarks upon a journey like the journey this one has, it’s inevitable those around them, particularly their visual story teller, will comprehend their feelings – it’s impossible to avoid the earnest love they fee for their childhood home!
And almost brings me to tears. Hence the cinematic music! And the drama of true love for this place. That is so much more than a place.
One does not lightly let go of such a valuable and coveted 9 acre ocean front estate.
Filming here – I smiled the entire time, brought back memories for me of the day I learned our English country mansion, nestled in the depths of Surrey’s National Trust Forests, was being put on the market.
I was devastated. I left my Red Sea Scuba Schools scuba diving work, a successful career in PADI’s world wide career scuba network, and flew back to confront the parents whose divorce prompted the sale!
Letting go of ones home, especially such a beautiful one, is as much of an upheaval as anything I have ever experienced. It’s still a space in which we mourn it’s loss, for my siblings and I, to this day!
Whoever purchases the Roebling property, whether 3 or 6 acre (sold as two separate lots) or the 9 acre complete parcel.
Commercially zoned, or otherwise, they will surely embark on such a journey!
It is absolutely magical, green, dreamy and inspiring, just running through trees, along or approaching from the sunrise speeding across the waves into the lagoon. Or walking out to the islands, across the flats at low tide! Or watching the hawks and gulls play and hunt!
Proposals of marriage are a tentative and nerve wrecking time for the one proposing and the one being proposed to. Proposals of marriage are meant to shake you to your core. It’s a seriously earth shaking decision. And the impact is so broad, not quite like a ripple on a lake, more like a tidal wave. Everyone you know and love will be impacted. It’s love, why be surprised? And it’s no surprise when we experience a seriously sharp increase in heart rate, our pupils dilate and the endorphins rage, maybe we should classify proposals of marriage as an ‘extreme sport?’
ADD IN THE CHALLENGE OF THE RIGHT TYPE & SIZE OF RING, FLOWERS, CORK POPPING, PHOTOGRAPHER, LOCATION AND TIMING! It’s a spell binding and dizzying ride, for sure.
Nerves Are Expected When Proposing
And what a relief when your beloved one says YES! These smiles and sighs of relief are genuinely not scripted at all. It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had with a photographic client. The intensity is really massive.
Whether you are proposing a new idea to a client or to your children for a new meal plan that cuts out meat – proposals of every kind in life, are a challenge. I proposed less meat on the menu this month – I was successful. But it would have really upset me if it had failed. I like animals too much.
Right? I mean, we ask for someone to be with us for the rest of our lives and they may need some time to think about it. In this case, with these two amazing young people, that was a short space of about 5 seconds.
Getting down on one knee is a vulnerable place to be. Truly, it’s when you put yourself below your intended. You look up into their eyes and basically beg them to have you for richer or poorer and until death do you part! Proposing marriage isn’t to be taken lightly. And yet many people do find themselves divorcing. And re-marrying.
Proposals of Marriage are a Seriously Serious Business
She really really energised everyone around here at the Hampton Inn in Key largo, with that smile and that radiance.
Seriously, though, proposals of marriage are seriously a serious business. Many lives change in that instant. You – whether on bended knee or free falling from 13,000 ft – yes sky diving proposals happen too – you go from being single, and hopeful, to being stunned and possibly committed!
Best practice I’d say is be some place where you are happy at the beach or wherever you are comfortable, because you will go from calm and coasting along to suddenly shocked, head spinning like a top, thousands of questions, definitely a gut reaction and adrenaline flowing. And hopefully a ‘yes’ will come out of your mouth and precipitate the kind of smiles only that ‘yes’ can generate!
Saying this makes me wonder whether a proposal of marriage shouldn’t be classed as an ‘extreme sport!’ Seriously – your heart beat increases, your pupils dilate, you experience a hit of endorphins for sure. And then what …. you hear yourself saying the words that will – in an inevitable wedding event a few months along – change your entire world and that of your family members. WOW! No pressure or anything!! Wooh!

Canal 242, Key By The Sea, AEI’s barges have cleaned up the bulk of debris, according to locals it was once possible to walk across the top of the trailer homes, they were piled one on top of the other.
On the Irmaversary of September 10th 2017 the odious Hurricane Irma threatened to wipe out communities in the Florida Keys. The destruction left in its wake was complete in some areas. Other areas faired better. Either way our Florida Keys life and the infrastructure and environmental assets that support it all are still here.
Albeit changed forever by Irma’s passing.
The series of short films we’re making gather together the clean up story, a year down the road, with regular updates on Monroe County Administrator, Roman Gastesi’s successful securing of funds for a $39 million dollar project from federal agency NRCS.
Approximately the federal funds are intended to return the canals and coastal communities’ waters to healthy, ‘clean waterways.’ For fund minutiae MCOBOCC and NRCS can be accessed from the links.
Our story is a visual journey that delivers information from the center of the clean up action along the Florida Keys.
We began filming Adventure Environmental Inc (AEI) when they launched their fleet of 13 barges out of a marina in Key Largo recently. The challenge of moving the fleet around the Florida Keys to most affected areas and removing debris from deep canals with shallow entrances is many fold.
AEI works to a required standard that involves a commitment to do no further harm whilst problem solving along the way. Manatees are gently herded out of canals by divers, the canals are blocked off ensuring the often anaerobic contents of the silt when stirred up by digger claws is contained as much as possible.
We filmed with aerial cameras as they piled the debris with care onto barges, loading into trucks, returning to precise pre-scanned sonar and gps points to ensure all debris is cleared.
At the Key By The Sea, Marathon, Floria site, environmental engineering company and official watchdog of the project, Wood Inc., log all the contents of the canals as they come up in the claw, get placed on the barge, get rinsed and transported to the debris pile for canal 242, a short truck drive away.
Here a at ‘The 242 Pile’ Wood Inc monitor records the slowly growing pile on her ipad, by taking a series of photos of the inside of the truck from above and each delivery after it’s placed on the pile.
According to locals, who have photos to back this statement up, Canal 242 a person could walk across on the top of the trailer homes after the storm.
Adventure Environmental Inc’s Operations Director Chris Colarusso informed Senator Marco Rubio during a recent 2 minute stop off at the Key By The Sea clean up site, “they were stacked on top of one another.”
Progress is ongoing, removing debris left by the storm and improving our waterways is a concern for the people who live here, the state of Florida, and a dire necessity to reclaim and reestablish a modicum of health on our precious and always challenged coastal environment. It has a global impact too.
In a time of ongoing commentary about inshore and nearshore coastal waterway health decline, algal blooms tied to fertilizer run off are a daily topic in the news, when we meet local long time fishermen who say the water looks bad, when we meet first time tourists who don’t want to swim in it.
Winning federal funding to clean waterways should be a celebrated moment because it sends the right impression. Yes. That matters. Perception changes minds and prompts actions.
In the end it’s the passion of a few that can turn the intentions of the many. For the good in this case. Another small group responsible for some of the biggest perception changes comes to mind. This month, September 2018 the annual Alligator Reef Light Swim has a massively positive impact on your and my perception of our waterways health. It’s their first since the storm. Welcome back. Keys Stronger.
